To the east is the National Museum of China, to the south Maozedong Memorial Hall, to the west Great Hall of the People and to the north is Tiananmen Gate. You can also watch the daily raising and lowering of the flag at sunset and sunrise.

Now it is China's most visited attraction with over 16 million tourists visiting per year .The Forbidden City is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. It was constructed from 1406 to 1420 which served as the palace for 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasty
The Forbidden city typifies ancient Chinese architecture with intricate wooden roofs and decorated wooden beams. The primary colours used are red, the most auspicious colour, yellow is the emperor's colour and green symbolizes growth, health, and balance.
The structure is based on Confucian thought which follows the south-north axis and was believed to point visitors towards Heaven. At the centre is the main building is the Hall of Supreme Harmony with the dragon throne because emperors were seen as descendants of dragons.
The 8m walls separate 2 sections of the GuGong the outer court where the emperor performed royal duties and ceremonies and the inner court where the emperor, his family and concubines resided.
